Bert Dempsey has more than 30 years’ experience as a practicing attorney. He received his law degree from Thomas Cooley law school in Lansing Michigan and practiced in Michigan for several years before coming to Colorado in 1982. He is admitted to practice in both Michigan and Colorado.

Following his own divorce in 1991 Bert trained in divorce and child custody mediation at the internationally recognized CDR Associates in Boulder, Colorado, in 1996. Following that training Bert volunteered with the City of Boulder Divorce Mediation Project for several years until the city stopped providing mediation for divorce cases. He has also received training in nonviolent communication from Marshall Rosenberg Ph. D.

Bert is a former member and chairperson of the board of directors of Blue Sky Bridge, a nonprofit organization assisting children and families dealing with childhood sexual abuse. Bert volunteered as a Court appointed special advocate for Voices for Children from 1991-97.

Bert’s personal mission statement for his work is:

To help divorcing families avoid unnecessary pain, expense and conflict through a collaborative process that acknowledges that it is the parties themselves, with guidance from their advisors, who are best qualified to determine their future and the future of their children.

Bert provides his clients with an honest assessment of the need for legal action, the potential cost of legal action, and the possible alternatives to legal action. In many cases, negotiation, mediation or collaboration can provide meaningful results at a lower cost than litigation.
